Hopewell Earthworks Museum

Hopewell Earthworks Museum

Overview

The Hopewell Earthworks Museum was inspired by my interest in history, archaeology, and a drive to learn about the cultures and people of the earth. The HEM itself is fictional, but the museum is dedicated to the very real Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, an incredible complex of geometric earthworks constructed almost 2000 years ago in what is now Ohio. It is a fascinating site that is mostly talked about in conspiracy theories, but it deserves to be much more well known.

A lot of the challenge in designing the visual identity of the HEM was finding a way to make a professional, serious, and consistent look. This appearance is essential to the success of the brand.

The design of the HEM relies on clean typography and starkly contrasting colors. The colors chosen are associated with many of the important cultural elements of the Hopewell, such as the sky, mica, and copper. One versatile sans-serif typeface makes up the majority of the HEM's typography, giving the museum the clean legibility necessary for its exhibits and dense information. All of the type and photos used are organized on a 9-column grid, supporting the museum's identity with an adaptable and visually appealing design that lets the complexity of Hopewell artifacts to take center stage.
